Local artists created a beautiful and affecting mural near the spot at Chicago Avenue and 38th Street where George Floyd was murdered by Minneapolis police officers on May 25. Xena Goldman, 30, one of the lead artists, along with Cadex Herrera and Greta McLain, said she wanted to create a “mural that would be appropriate to call attention to this horrible act that occurred, and to honor [Floyd].” Goldman, a Chicago native, said the project came together quickly, after community members gave it their blessing. The inscription below Floyd’s image says, “I can breathe now.”
The June 2020 edition of the Jewish World features stories about the murder of Floyd and the riots that followed in late May. A JTA story by Debra Nussbaum Cohen looked at Jewish involvement in clean-up and distributing supplies to those in need; and another story by Shira Hanau focused on the work of local activists with Jewish Community Action. Finally, AJW editor Mordecai Specktor, who lives in the Powderhorn Park neighborhood of South Minneapolis, reflected on the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis cops and the days of rage and destruction that followed.
