Eli Valley draws the line on hypocrisy

Eli Valley’s biting political cartoons have appeared in The Nation, The Forward and various online venues. Now a full-blown anthology has been published. Diaspora Boy: Comics on Crisis in America and Israel (OR Books) is a large-format paperback, with a foreword by Peter Beinart. Jewish communal leaders, evangelical Christians touring Israel (“Come to the Holy Land and help it burn!”), Bernie Madoff and Israeli politicians presuming to speak on behalf of Diaspora Jewry take the brunt of Valley’s critiques. The artist enjoys the praise his work receives, and also delights in the words of his detractors: A press release quotes the judgment of former ADL head Abe Foxman, who finds the cartoons “bigoted, unfunny.” — Mordecai Specktor
