Formerly known as J. Russ Cut Rate Appetizing, Russ & Daughters (the name changed in 1935) is the last “appetizing store” on New York’s Lower East Side, the landing zone for millions of Jewish immigrants in the prior century. In Russ & Daughters: Reflections and Recipes from the House That Herring Built (Schocken),” Mark Russ Federman, grandson of store founder Joel Russ, pays tribute to a shop that the New York Times called “New York’s most hallowed shrine to the miracle of caviar, smoked salmon, ethereal herring, and silken chopped liver.” The book is replete with black-and-white photos, plus eight pages of full-color photos of Jewish delicacies to make your mouth water. — M.S.
