Jeffrey Jewelry staked their claim to the #1 playoff seed with a 16-13 victory over SuperClean and a 19-13 win over Sox Construction.  Leading the way for the Jewelers were Chalie Herseth who went 8 for 8 with two home runs. Andy Schectman and Harlan Rossman who both homered and Barry Rothman and Mike Gittelson each getting 6 hits.  SuperClean bounced back with a 10-2 victory over HMB in their 2nd game behind the strong pitching of Howard Rankin and stellar infield play by Bob Winer, Jason Sondell, Scott Landy and Lonny Goldsmith.

P&J promotions took care of Sox Construction in a 26-18 slugfest behind the hitting of Todd Krulewicz, Glen Aronauer and Jeremy Budda in their early game.  And then, in a game with major playoff implications, Continental Diamond defeated P&J promotions 14-12 in spite of a furious five inning rally in the bottom of the 7th by P&J.  Geoff Rothstein led the way for Continental with a big home run. In other action, the Clippers beat Material Processing Corp 11-9 and MPC eked out a 6-5 win over Alliance Steel.

The first annual B’nai B’rith Community Picnic was held after the games this week, and was highlighted by a dunktank for kids of all ages, a homerun derby and delicious catering by Torah Academy in St. Louis Park.

Of the 16 entrants in the Homerun Derby, only three of whom were able to muster more than two home runs in the first round as Geoff Roether hit six, Harlan Rossman hit four and Karl Turbenson hit three.  Charlie Herseth also snuck into the finals by hitting two home runs in the first round and then winning the tiebreaker over several other entrants.  In the finals, Herseth took home the Golden Bat by leading off with nine home runs, which nobody else could match.

Here are the updated standings:

  1. Jeffrey Jewelers 15-3
  2. SuperClean 13-5
  3. P&J Promotions 11-7
  4. HMB 11-8
  5. Continental Diamond 10-8
  6. Sox Construction 7-11
  7. Materials Processing 7-11
  8. Clippers 6-12
  9. Alliance Steel 2-17

Action resumes Sunday, Aug. 1 with P&J Promotions playing Continental Diamond at 10:45 a.m. on Aquila Field 2 in a showdown for the fourth and final playoff bye.

Geoff Roether is commissioner of the B’nai B’rith Softball League.
