Johnson Hospice Care Agency hosted the first annual “Remember and Release Butterfly Event” on Aug. 23 at the Johnson Center on the Sholom Community Alliance’s Rossy and Richard Shaller Family Campus in St. Paul. After a program of readings and prayers, participants stepped outside to Heidi’s Garden and released butterflies, which symbolize hope and freedom.

Sholom Community Alliance’s Medicare-certified Johnson Hospice Care Agency (JHCA) combines ancient traditions with modern tools, and offers care to terminally ill clients, with specialized services for Jewish clients and families.

Hospice care is delivered in the client’s home — whether it is a private home, assisted living residence or a nursing home. Care is directed by the client’s primary physician and delivered by nurses, social workers, hospice aides and chaplains who focus on easing physical, emotional and spiritual pain by meeting the individualized needs of each client and his or her family.

Hospice volunteer training will be offered at the Shaller Family Campus 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct 27; 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sundays, Nov. 1 and Nov. 8; and 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10. Training includes Jewish spiritual perspectives and practical guidance for visiting hospice clients. Trainers include Rabbi Amy Eilberg, Rabbi Shalom Reznik-Bell, and hospice staff.

For details about volunteering, contact Judy Marcus at 952-542-4840 or e-mail: jmarcus@sholom.com.

Regarding the upcoming High Holy Days, the Shaller Family Sholom East Catering Department can prepare a complete “home-cooked” Rosh Hashana dinner for your family.

This delicious kosher “Meal-in-a-Box” provides multi-courses beginning with chicken soup, gefilte fish, sliced tomatoes, homemade challa knots and, of course, apples and honey. Families can choose from two entrees — either slow roasted beef brisket with root vegetable gravy, or oven-roasted turkey breast with thyme and shallot gravy and two “sides” — carrot tsimmes, fresh green beans, oven-browned potatoes or potato latkes. Dessert is appropriately honey cake.

Cost is $19.95 per person – all orders require a 10-person minimum.

For information about Rosh Hashana Meals in a Box or other Shaller Catering services and menus, contact Jacques Philippon, Shaller director of dining and nutrition services at 651-328-2029.
