Grover, the blue monster from Sesame Street, has recorded a video segment asking Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz why the Jewish people need a day of rest.

Grover posed the question to Steinsaltz, who this November will complete his 45-year quest to translate the Talmud and unlock its wisdom for modern Jews. Visitors can read Steinsaltz’s response and join the discussion online at: www.theglobalday.com/grover.

As part of a global campaign to spark interest in Jewish learning, the short video is part of an effort launched in June to engage Jews from all segments of the community in a global dialogue about Judaism’s take on “big questions” like good and evil, heaven and hell, sex and relationships, and more. It is part of the Global Day of Jewish Learning project supported by more than 40 national and international groups representing over 250 communities.

Grover is featured in updated versions of Sesame Workshop’s Shalom Sesame series due for release in December. Shalom Sesame, which produced the Grover video, is among the groups supporting the Global Day of Jewish Learning.
