Eric Heuvel’s graphic novel explores Dutch family’s secret from the Nazi occupation
Eric Heuvel is one of the top graphic artists in the Netherlands, and concentrates on writing and illustrating educational graphic novels. His newest effort, A Family Secret (Farrar Strauss and Giroux), is a historically accurate account of life in Amsterdam during the German occupation of the Netherlands. Jeroen finds a photo album that brings back hard memories for his grandmother, Helena. And after he hears the stories about her Jewish best friend, Esther, and her own father, a policeman and Nazi sympathizer, Jeroen makes a surprising discovery. A Family Secret and its companion novel, The Search, have won the Dutch Comics Association’s category award. — E.E.B.
